Drawing Again

For this drawing session, we focused on an artist called Alberto Giacometti who is famous for creating sculptures and also his drawings.

I really like the two drawings/paintings I have displayed here by Alberto Giacommetti. As we have been practising during the elective, I love the general mark making in 'Portait D'Homme'. Just by using round, circular, sweeping motions it shows you can create visually quite an impact as this drawing shows lots of detail and depth in the face of the man. In 'the artists mother' painting, I love the layering up of paint and how it has been re worked and re drawn over.

For this drawing session having the inspiration in mind from Giacometti, we did a series of three drawings which evoke different emotions and also different textures such as joyful and fear and then soft and also spikey for texture and shape.

This is my first drawing of a spikey object, a metal necklace. I love the way this turned out. I had 40 minutes to draw this. With the necklace being a goldish colour with silver, the shadows on the necklace were really obvious to see so it wasn't to hard for me to draw these down on the paper. I like that the close up drawing does actually look 3D and I think it represents the metal quite well too.

The second object I drew was a teddy bear. This was to represent the soft element.

I am pleased with the way this drawing came out. I think that using a swirly mark making technique with the pencil works well and captures the shape and pattern of the fur of the teddy bear. I think the colour of the bear was a bit distracting as I don't think I managed to translate the shadow very well. If I were to do this again, I would practice on small thumbnails drawings of certain areas where shadow appears and try to improve on that.

The final drawing of the session was to represent the joyful element.

I think this is my favourite drawing of the drawing elective. I used charcoal to do this, whereas in all of my other drawings I have used pencil. I love how this drawing came out. Taking into consideration I was using charcoal in this drawing, I knew that if I made a mistake, it wouldn't rub out so easily and I really wanted it to be good. I tried to imagine what the angel would look like in greyscale, so I would make the darker areas really dark with the charcoal and the lighter ones I would shade or smudge. I used my finger to create the smudged effect of the angels body as it is made from a soft grey fabric. I feel by really concentrating on this drawing, I have definately captured the cuteness of the angel with the look on her face with the smile and the beady little eyes. The drawing almost looks like an illustration you would find in a childrens book or something which I am really proud of achieving. It almost looks printed, the way I have drawn it neatly. Overall, I love this drawing and wouldn't do anything to change it.

From this drawing session, I feel like I've learnt a lot about mark making and what difference using another media can make. At the beginning of this vis com unit, I said I wanted the challenge myself and I think I have done that this week, even with something just as simple as changing the media I use, such as charcoal to put me out of my comfort zone and obviously I can do this well.
